At A Loss For Words…

It is one of those times where i am tired and at a loss for words…

Straight Ahead Outreach-Taking Back Your Life Inc. (STA) works extremely hard helping others in need.

One of my jobs as Founder/CEO/Senior Case Manager of STA, is to raise funds to operate and raise funds to help those in need.

I SUCK at it.   At raising funds.  I know why i suck at it.  Because my focus and talents are on helping people.

By the Grace of God and He and His Son only…i am excellent at helping people.

I plain and simply, SUCK at raising funds and it gets quite depressing at times to be very honest, but i must push through and always do because it is God at the Wheel and not me.

Now is one of those depressing times.

I do not know what to say anymore to bring donations in.  All i can say is the work we do is real, it makes impacts and the donations received by you make those impacts possible.

Straight Ahead Outreach-Taking Back Your Life Inc., once again for the umpteenth time is out of funds and having to turn away people in need.

It upsets me.  Depresses me.  It makes me think…”What am i doing?”

We do not post a lot of details or photos of those we help intentionally.  Especially showing where they may live etc.  I know this most likely harms our fundraising efforts but i simply do not believe in plastering the “dirty laundry” of those we help and their lives all over the internet.  I mean, would you want me coming to your house when you are at your lowest and taking pictures and videos?  I seriously do not believe so.

You can compare us, STA to a Domestic Violence organization.  STA is a Mobile Crisis Outreach unit.  People we help are in dire and urgent need…many times very depressing need and in dangerous situations.  You do not see photos, names or details on those Domestic Violence websites either.  It is the same thing.  When we do post pictures, the family is very aware of it and understands the ramifications possible. We do not post pictures of their living conditions or exact locations typically.

I realize people love to see the “train wreck” and love to see and hear how bad people are doing.

Ya wanna know what?   IF you really knew how bad it was for some people you probably wouldn’t believe it anyway.  If you knew exactly what we did and how much with the little funds we work with, you simply would not believe that either.  You couldn’t handle it.

Like the famous line in the movie with Tom Cruise & Jack Nicholson…..

“You Can’t Handle The Truth!”…..

And you shouldn’t have to...that is our job, STA’s job and Responsibility, as the 501c3 Nonprofit Mobile Crisis Outreach Public Charity. But we need your monetary support to do that job. It affects communities everywhere.

So, what i meant by that i was at a loss for words is…I simply do not know what else to say other then we do what we say we do and more.

STA Does What Ever It Takes

We have an extremely busy and full schedule hitting us these days.

We need monetary support, period.  We do not take wages. Never have.

Would love to be able to take a wage one day that is for sure, but those we help come first.   Period.  God’s Requirement.

We ARE a 501c3 Nonprofit.  We are set up to survive on Donations.

We are not wealthy, not even close.  

Our personal entertainment, is helping others in need.  My wife (STA VP) and i have not had a vacation in over ten years, i cannot remember the last time we went to and spent money on a movie or anything else like that and we make ourselves available up to and including 24 hours per day, 7 days per week via computer, vehicle, phone and text.  

What i am trying to say by that is this, I guarantee you your Donations are not spent or wasted on frivolous needs.

We Make Impacts on Those In Need

We Help people Take Back Their Lives.

We need your support.

Come on, $10 has to be possible for many many people out there.

Simply ask where it is going or tell me where you want it to go and that is what will happen.

We need gasoline for our Mobile Crisis Outreach van…

We need a new Mobile Crisis Outreach van, our current one is a 1995 Chevrolet with over 250,000 miles on it and is nickle and diming us.

 We need Food and Beverages for our Mobile Food Pantry…

We need funds to literally help those we assist with housing, clothing, food, transportation, laundry services, job searches, basic normal cell phones, haircuts, showers, furniture and more.

We need new mobile capable computers as we are 100% mobile and our current computers are over 8 years old, slow and with not much capacity.

***Ok, Ok…. At A Loss For Words…was probably the wrong title for this blog.

Bottom line is, we need your monetary support.

Providing Hope In The Midst of Crisis, in Jesus’s name

These photos are not actual.  Well, all except one.  One is real.  All except one are internet “stock photos”.   But they all depict who we reach and there are more types then these shown here such as disabled and or incarcerated.

In the past i have posted a few stories on here, not many however, along with the real photos of those in need we are assisting involved.  They were posted with their full permission.   However, i found as i always have before that even though they gave their full permission an i explained fully to them where i was posting them etc, i found they still did not understand completely all the different ramifications that could and do many times follow. 

So, i decided to not do that anymore if i could help it.  That is why you see my stories here are generally vague and only give minimal details.

The other part of it is the stories always have heart wrenching, extremely personal and traumatic details involving multiple family members and or friends.  Ugliness as i call it.  Always ugliness.  The stories do not have nice pretty themes to them.  If they did they would not be calling us here at Straight Ahead Outreach-Taking Back Your Life Inc.  

The best why i can extend to you for you to understand is, think for a moment.  Would you want me coming to your home or your Mothers home or your son or daughters and taking pictures of all your trauma happening, the way you live and eat and sleep and how you act and and and and…….?

Would you like me coming over when you were not expecting me and taking photos of your unclean house?   

In addition, inmates we pick up and provide Hope, guidance and support to have obvious stories of strife.  I will not give details here.   It will not help them on their road to recovery. 

This is why it can be so difficult for us to raise funds, because we do not post the full tragic stories for anyone’s entertainment – it is not entertainment.

Kudos to Pinellas Park,FL Police and Pinellas County Sheriffs…

My Apologies, This is LONG Overdue…..

I do apologize for the delay in writing this Thank You and Kudos to the Pinellas Park, Florida Police Officers and the Pinellas County Sheriff Deputies on approx 5/18/2012 during an altercation late into the evening.

This situation involved 7 Squads at two different locations and culminated at the two involved residence and place of work and involved over 8 family members in total by the time we were done at approx 1:00am.

I simply wanted to extend my Kudos and appreciation for the professionalism of all officers involved.  They should have never even had to become involved in this situation but one of the two involved called 911 unbeknownst to the rest of the family or to the family member who called us, Straight Ahead Outreach.

Not one of the 7 officers involved at any time during the 3 hours raise their voice to anyone.   Each officers demeanor to ALL those involved including me was impeccable.   Seriously.  

This includes to the two who were the cause of the situation.   The Pinellas Park Officers and Pinellas County Sheriff Deputies simply could not have treated them better.  

They did their job and let me do my job.  I am simply sorry they even had to be called out, but they were there before i arrived, but only minutes before.  They could have been doing much more important calls i am 100% sure.

To me, this situation turned out to be what i would call a “nuisance call”.

By the end of it all we all had dealt with it and everyone went on their way, the officers left quietly, the Sheriff Deputies shook hands with us and family members and they went on their way.  Although one ended up in handcuffs at one point, no one needed to go to jail.  

They left me to do what i do and all was quiet.   If you had not seen us all out there you would have never known we were there.

STA’s New Outreach Vehicle.  Seriously.

Today has been an interesting and pretty cool day for me personally.  Honestly, my health has been pretty poor for the last 3 years and the last year it has not been a fun ride shall we say and i have been trying to get back to being “me” again.   The last few days i felt horrible, today i felt good enough to take a ride.  

So, I decided to make this bicycle our new Outreach Vehicle for now, until we can obtain an outreach scooter or repair our van.  I think this is a good thing actually.   The bicycle allows me to stop and go, much easier and in areas not so easy with our van.  The only draw back for me is we cannot carry as much supplies, but there again is where i believe Jesus is telling me that i do not need as much supplies with me at one time like we did before.  Jesus is controlling it all this time (including my health), not me.  Jehovah knew, a great way to slow me down was to affect my health, and so He did.   Now He has placed Jesus back in charge of my activities.  :-))!

So, On A Bike and a Prayer, i set out today in order to make myself ride and get some exercise in.   I was looking for more then exercise however, i was looking for some answers.   Well, lots of em, but one in particular.  1) What do i do with this nonprofit Jehovah, which YOU gave me, what do i do?

Normally i go a specific route around about a 2 mile area just for exercise about 3 times per week, if i am able.  Today, i decided to do that plus go through a park where Pat and i have never been before to check it out.   As i went through, a scripture came to me i have been talking to Jehovah about alot lately.  An “exercise” i am learning from Joel Osteen.  I am learning to bring to Jehovah’s attention what HE says in the bible, HIS word.  And so i let HIM know about it and that i am expecting it and trying to do everything in my own power to help HIM make it easy for me to receive it.  Here is the scripture i keep reminding Jehovah that this is what HE promises (remember, i am working on improving my health):  Isaiah 40: 29-31  29)  He is giving to the tired one power; and to the one without dynamic energy he makes full might abound. 30)  Boys will both tire out and grow weary, and young men themselves will without fail stumble,  31)  but those who are hoping in Jehovah will regain power.  They will mount up with wings like eagles.  They will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not tire out.”

My bicycling is me doing my part and He is giving me the strength little by little to do it.   When we used the van, the van could be fairly intimidating to those we helped, this bicycle or even a scooter brings us closer, quieter, personal and much more simply.  Seems to me like Jesus does things, quiet, simple and personal.  Hmmmmmmm, interesting eh?

Ok, so i am in the park now on my Bike now in the park i mentioned and i begin my Prayer to Jehovah reminding him of the above scripture and me needing the strength and my health back, wanting to serve Him and Jesus.   I continue my ride around the park and meditate on that prayer for just a bit, the park is beautiful, i know Jesus is there, i can feel Him, Jehovah once again has sent Him, i do not give it another thought.  Knowing Jesus was there was enough.   No, no other answers just now….simply presence.

I continue on my ride leaving the park, back towards home about 3 miles away.  I decide for some reason to go the long way home.  Sheesh!  :-))!

Almost home i ride past a man rolling his suitcase and looking at his smartphone.  No, he is not in the picture, sorry.  I know he is heading towards the Greyhound Bus Depot nearby.  I wonder….am i to stop and see if he needs anything?  The answer came as no.  He excused himself as i came by and we said our hello’s.   Nothing more, weird i thought for a second.  I came to a vacant building very close to where we live, i went behind it simply to look out of curiosity.  What i found was a rather large area, a perfect area for a homeless camp and that is exactly what it was.  The area where we live is very busy.  Lots of shopping areas and many homeless walk all up and down our street, Gulf to Bay Blvd.

Please forgive me for dragging on, but this blog is all about my quest for a new outlook on how we will be operating our 501c3 nonprofit and not giving up on it.

As i look around this camp, i can feel the presence of someone in one of the thick bushes, they were resting so i did not disturb them and no, did not take a photo of them.  I walked around the area, soaking it all in and now knowing Jesus was once again directing me, as He has so many times before.  Except this time it was different, it was to show me and get me to think, get me to meditate on what was needed, what Jesus needed.   Hmmmm, i could feel it, again, just as so many times before, except before it was much more intense and the situations were extremely intense and fast.

Today, once again the message to me was of simplicity.  However,  Simple does not necessarily mean easy, it simply means simple, in Jesus’s way.  Quiet and Simple.  STA has always done things quietly as far as the general public is concerned, seeing the activities etc, BUT, our activities have not always been quiet for those we have been helping.  It has been often intense, hard and fast.  It worked, Jesus dorected it all and it worked.   However, it about killed me.  That has become obvious to me.

Jesus knows what i do, what He wants and who He has doing the work He needs done.  We, Pat and i, STA, although we have still been helping a few clients in Knoxville, TN for the last 3 years we have primarily been doing our nonprofit outreach work in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater FL area of Pinellas County and at times in Hillsborough County across the Bay.   It is HOT here as you know i am sure.  Sometimes it feels like Hell!  HA!  Get the pun there ?  Hehehe :-))!

As i have stated recently in other blog articles here, our nonprofit work will focus on the more simple.   For starters less fuel will be used then was before.  Fuel has always been our highest expense other then motel stays for those we helped.  Even so, fuel still was more of a burden 90% of the time.

Sorry, i digress.   So as i rode out of this homeless camp area, approx 4 blocks from our house, Jesus placed in me STA’s job for the near future.  BTW, welcome back Jesus!  Sheesh!  Where ya been!  LOL  :-))!

Jesus gave me the direction, to provide water and simple sustenance to those we help and squeeze in His Fathers Word as often as we can.  BRING HIM HIS Sheep He says, and if we cannot bring them to Him at least do what we can for them.   As i said above, we are in Florida and it is getting to be summer, hot hot hot.

There ya go!  For now,  On a Bike and a Prayer,  that is how we/me/STA will be doing our work for the most part here in Clearwater, Florida.

When we have funds to do so or the product, STA will be bringing Water and Simple Sustenance such as fruit and nuts and at other times toiletries and other needed items to those we come across, those who Jesus directs us to…. Those will be:

1)  His Sheep that have gone astray
2)  Those who he feels are simply in need and He wants help for
3)  They may even be You

Today, 2/22/2012, the Sheriff comes.

Today, a 42 year old disabled female, who has a brain injury and is confined to a wheelchair will be removed, along with all her belongings from her current apartment where she has lived since October of 2008.  They, meaning her and her belongings will be set outside by the Sheriff Deputies.  They will simply be doing their job.  One i know they hate to do.  

She is on disability and food stamps.  Period.  Because of how the “system” is set up she has nowhere to go.  Today, this disabled 42 year old female will be once again homeless, literally and on the streets, literally, by herself. Her family has abandoned her long ago.

In 2007 she was homeless and on the streets in TN until we, STA took her off the streets in mid 2008 and into our personal home for approx 4 months before locating her current apartment.

We, STA, has done all we can for her for the last 3.5 years.  We can no longer assist her due to our lack of funds.  

We were able to raise approx $1200 for her in 2010 in order to pay a past bill preventing her from gaining housing.  Remember, she has a brain injury, she is disabled beyond being able to work.  But the “system” says she is good enough so as not to qualify for residency in a structured, safe facility such as a rehab with a housing program.  And also the brain injury rehabs will not take her because of her lack of money and behaviors.

As i stated above, she was homeless in 2007-2008 for approx 9 months.  She slept in her wheelchair in the downtown area of Knoxville, TN.  Although i despise the thought of her being homeless and on the streets again, i do know this…. when she was on the streets of Knoxville, she had numerous other homeless friends who looked out for her for the most part.  She was free so to speak.  GOD, was taking care of her, obviously.  

So now, because we as a people, us as an organization, and the industry of homelessness as a “system” cannot help her properly, she is going back to the streets, in her wheelchair…… back into Jehovah God‘s hands.  I can see Him shaking His head in dismay.  As God’s Son Jesus stated in the New Testament in Matthew 17:17 & Mark 9:19:  ”You unfaithful people, how long must i be with you, bring him to me”. 

So, we bring her back to you Jesus, for you and your Father Jehovah God to please take care of her.  I apologize we were not better able to take care of her.  Our Faith and those we reached out to was obviously not enough, for we must have not practiced enough faith, must not have focused on you Jehovah God enough and others we reached out to did not practice faith in us or maybe they didn’t believe us.  I understand to you, Jehovah and Jesus, that homelessness is not the problem, we people are the problem.  Homelessness to you is normal, it is all the other crap we as people do that corrupts everything, adulterates everything.  Homelessness today is nothing like it was in Bible times.  Yes, many likenesses, but there simply should not be disabled people living on the streets today.

This lady knows the streets, but i simply hate seeing this happen.  I hate it to my very core.  It simply shouldn’t happen in today’s world.  She deserves to have at the very least a “normal” quality of life.

The Sheriff comes to remove her from her apartment today, 2/22/2012.

A Prayer for Donna:  I pray to you Jehovah God in Jesus’s name that you please take care of her as i know you and only you can.  Please forgive me and the communities for not accomplishing what we are here on this earth to do.  Forgive me for relying on the people for funding, i now realize i should have been relying on You and You only.  My focus was on trying to raise funds from the general public not on You.   Thank You Jehovah and Jesus for once again taking her back into your fold.  I ask that as she enters the streets today that you please cover her with your vast wings, keep her warm, safe and in good spirits.  I know you will.  I know you always have.  Thank you, in Jesus name.  Amen.

Just Because…  Especially in todays world…

Just because someone is Homeless does not mean they do not want to work.

Give someone Homeless a job today.  Give them the chance.  Prevent Social decay for someone today.

It could be you tomorrow.

I rant, whine and complain on here how we help keep your streets safe, where ever we operate.  Be it Knoxville, TN, or the Tampa Bay Florida area of St. Petersburg/Clearwater FL areas.

Do you understand what that means? Do you care?  Well let me share, so you do care.

Today, 8/11/11 at 2:13am – I received a call from one of our Friends In Need who was released from the Hillsborough Florida County Jail at about 1:00am.  It is across the Bay from us.  In this case, the person was arrested in one county and brought across the bay over 25 miles one way to another county.

Everywhere we have done our work, we will get calls from our Friends In Need after they have been released from jail in the middle of the night.  Usually around 1:00am – 3:00am.   Do i agree with this practice?  Absolutely not.   Can you figure out why?   Do you know why they call us?

First, is this the Police’s fault?  No.  Is it the Courts fault?  No.  Is it the jails fault?  No.  Of course it is the Friend In Needs fault as they should not have placed themselves in the position to get arrested in the first place and that is what we teach and coach them on.  It takes time.  But we are here to do it.

However, i do not support the practice of letting out arrested individuals to the streets in the middle of the night.

1) The individual is scared.  Most of them are a target for “trouble”.   They do not want to get picked up again for making another poor decision without anyone to coach them through to prevent that poor decision.  Even if they try to stay away from trouble at that time in the night, no matter what happens they are going to look like the bad guy.

2) They dont want to be wandering as that is when the trouble finds them and if they do not participate, then a fight can ensue.

3) They simply want to get home and off the street.  In this case the person was released into Tampa FL, over 25 miles from his home in St. Petersburg FL.  Why make it all that more complicated and difficult?  We are just asking for trouble.  We are brewing it in fact.  Period. We are more than Happy to pick them up and get them home safely if our equipment is in proper running order.  This is our attempt and participation in Fighting, Preventing, Stopping Social Decay.

4) Normally, we would go pick up the Friend In Need.  However, in this case we would have to go on the highway which involves 70 mph speeds here due to the traffic flow.  Our Mobile Crisis van right now cannot get out of 3rd gear so we are unable to safely reach proper highway speeds.  So, we were not able to go pick up this particular Friend In Need.  He ended up spending his last monies taking buses.  He was on the streets from 1:00am – 8:00am when he finally got home.  Seven…… 7 hours.

5) This individual who does have a past record, but is “trying” key word, “trying” to the best of his capacity to change his life. Many do NOT try.  He has done pretty well, going to school for Construction, getting his own apartment, getting his own part-time job and more.  We have known him for approx 8 months.  He has a good heart.  But he simply needs to learn more.  

6) We view this as our job.  Not the Police’s job to escort them home and coach them, spend time with them. They have many other Civil needs to tend to.  Our Responsibility to our 501c3 Certification was to help relieve the Municipal Police, Ambulance and Medical Facilities of “nuisance” type issues.  These types of issues being released to the streets in the middle of the night can become very quickly a “nuisance issue”.  Yours/Our local Police Departments have more than enough to deal with.  We need your help to continue this work.  This work is extremely valuable to everyone.  Including you.  

So, Did You Know, that in your area too most likely there are individuals being released to the street at all hours of the night?  Did you know?  They have Court 24 hours, right there in jail.  Did You Know?

They are mostly scared and hyper at that time.  They just want to get out of sight.  Typically they are not out to do any harm to anyone.  BUT, why should we take that risk.  Why should we set them up to fail?  Why?  I personally really am not looking for an answer from you.  I am simply wanting YOU to think.

We have a client who has been arrested 63 times for this kind of thing.  63 times!  Trust me.  This is a lot of work.  Work which you as the General Public simply do not make yourself aware of or simply do not understand.   Orgs like us do some intense work.  Work no one ever sees or hears about.  Sad.  We keep YOUR streets safe.

Go ahead, do a Google search of Mobile Crisis units in the USA.  You will not find one like us for the most part.  We are one of the only ones of our type that provides the services such as described here for example.  Most Mobile crisis Units are mainly for the most part for someone suicidal.  They will not go out to just pick someone up because they are in a panic after being released from jail.  We, STA does and will, as long as we have a working vehicle, 24/7, 365 days per year.  Any time of day or night in other words.

I will be meeting in about 1.5 hours with a family in Crisis in St. Petersburg, FL.  The adult son has Emotional Damage.  Some inflicted by others and some put on him by himself……………due to the Emotional Damage inflicted by others which has made him think adverse things about himself, questioning himself, over and over.  Not knowing which direction to go or how he should be or what others expect him to be or act like or live like or look like or sound like or move like or friend like or, or , or , or , or ………..he has been tied up into a pretzel and doesn’t know how to untie himself.  He isn’t sure even IF he needs to be untied. 

Treat a Person As They Are, and They Will Remain As They Are.

Treat Them As They Could Be, & They Will Become What They Should Be.

Does this person have some issues he needs to work on?  Sure does.  Don’t we all?   Don’t you?   

Today i will be speaking to and getting to know the Mother and the Sister.   They are both also in Crisis.  They do not know which way to turn either.  I am going to work on giving them some relief, some Hope, some direction.   We have spoke some already on a couple occasions.

Can this succeed?  I believe it can.  Is the person involved here worth it, even after all the hardship they are placing on others?   Hmmmmm…..wait a minute.  There isn’t just an individual involved here.  The Whole Family is involved……in Crisis.

Will they be ok?     Yes.   How can you help today at this moment?   Prayers, Prayers and thoughts of good for this Family please.

And in case the individual, i will call him a Friend In Need, is shown this writing, i would like to say to him………..  E.S., it is Time for you Sir, as the picture below is saying……. reach back, reach wayyyy back, it is Time, Time to reach back and Take Back Your Life.    Go For It!   E.S., Give me a call, lets get together.  No bull, no pressure (well maybe a little, lol), lots of laughter, and lots of Hope.  Will it be easy E.S.?  Nah, but you can trust me.   Give me a call Sir.  Today.  :-))!
